The GEO playbook is still young, and the myths filling that gap are expensive. Teams are adding schema markup, obsessing over Google rank, and optimizing for a single engine, all while their citation share sits at zero. The studies below are named, numbered, and caveated so you can use them exactly as they stand.
Myth 1: Schema markup reliably drives AI citations
Myth: Add JSON-LD FAQ, HowTo, or Article schema to your pages and your AI citation rate will climb.
Reality: Contradictory. An Ahrefs study tracking 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD schema (August 2025 to March 2026) found no meaningful uplift in AI citations across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, or ChatGPT. Google AI Mode showed a +2.4% change and ChatGPT showed +2.2%, both statistically indistinguishable from zero; Google AI Overviews showed a small decline of -4.6%. Separately, Otterly.AI observed a +1,500% rise in Google AI Overviews appearances after a sitewide schema rollout on their own site. But Otterly.AI’s own researchers concluded the lift was algorithmic, not schema-driven: competitors who made no schema changes saw equivalent movement over the same period. The increase was Google AI Overviews-specific; citations on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot dropped during the same window.

Myth 2: Ranking in Google’s top 10 is enough to be cited in AI answers
Myth: If you rank on page one of Google, AI engines will pull your content as a citation. GEO is just SEO with a new name.
Reality: Almost entirely false. According to an Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries (August 2025), only about 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity combined) also appeared in Google’s top 10 results for the same query. For ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot specifically, the overlap dropped to roughly 8%. Perplexity was a meaningful outlier at about 29% overlap, but even that leaves 71% of Perplexity’s citations coming from outside Google’s top 10.

The practical read: GEO is a distinct discipline, not a synonym. A page can rank in position one on Google and receive zero citations from ChatGPT or Gemini. The reverse is also true: pages with no organic ranking at all earn consistent AI citations because they carry the right structural signals (direct answers, factual density, trusted third-party mentions). Treat GEO measurement separately from SEO rank tracking.

Myth 4: Blocking AI crawlers has no effect on citation share
Myth: AI engines index content the same way Google does. Whether or not you allow AI crawler access does not change whether you get cited.
Reality: False. Blocking AI crawlers removes your content from retrieval-based engines entirely. According to Otterly.AI’s 2026 AI Citation Economy report, 73% of sites already have technical barriers preventing AI crawler access, including robots.txt blocks, CDN security rules that reject non-browser user agents, and JavaScript rendering issues. A related dynamic: Amazon deliberately blocks AI crawlers from scraping its product data. According to Similarweb data reported by Modern Retail (August 2025), ChatGPT accounted for less than 3% of Amazon’s referral traffic, compared to roughly 20% for Walmart and Etsy, both of which allow AI crawler access. That difference reflects access policy, not content quality.
The practical read: before running any GEO content programme, audit your technical AI-crawler accessibility. Check your robots.txt, CDN configuration, and JavaScript rendering. Myth 5: Where you put the answer on the page does not matter
Myth: AI engines read the full page and surface the best answer regardless of where it sits. Structure your content for human readers, not for LLM retrieval position.
Reality: False. According to Kevin Indig’s 2026 analysis of 1.2 million ChatGPT responses (reported by Search Engine Land), 44.2% of ChatGPT citations were drawn from the first 30% of a page’s content, what Indig calls the “ski ramp” distribution. The middle third contributed 31.1% of citations; the final third contributed 24.7%. Pages that bury the direct answer past the first third of the page are meaningfully less likely to earn a citation than pages that front-load a self-contained answer.

The practical read: the front-loaded direct answer is the single highest-leverage on-page change in GEO. Write the conclusion at the top. Keep it one or two sentences, self-contained, and factually dense. Then support it in the body. What to do instead
Five actions that follow directly from the evidence above:
- Audit AI crawler access first. Check robots.txt, CDN rules, and JavaScript rendering before writing a single word of GEO content. A blocked site earns no citations.
- Front-load every target page with a one-sentence direct answer. The first 30% of your page drives nearly half of ChatGPT’s citations. Put the conclusion at the top.
- Track citation share across engines, not just one. ChatGPT and Perplexity overlap on only 11% of domains. Optimizing for one engine and ignoring the rest leaves most of your gap invisible.
- Measure GEO and SEO separately. Only 12% of AI-cited URLs rank in Google’s top 10. Your organic rank is not a proxy for citation share.
