Picture a SaaS company holding the #1 Google spot for “project management software for agencies.” Its content team spent a year earning that position: solid backlinks, tight on-page work, regular updates. Ask ChatGPT the same question, and it fans the prompt into sub-queries like “best agency PM tools 2026 reviews,” “project management software agency pricing comparison,” and “PM tools agencies recommend on Reddit.” None of those match the exact phrase the company ranks for. The #1 page never enters ChatGPT’s retrieval set at all, while a mid-tier competitor’s comparison post, written around that exact sub-query wording, gets cited across all three.

Does this pattern hold across other engines?

Not evenly. Ranking-to-citation overlap varies a lot depending on which engine does the citing.

A separate Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries put Perplexity’s overlap with Google’s top 10 at roughly 29%, well above ChatGPT’s single-digit rate. Perplexity leans more heavily on live search results at the moment it answers, which pulls its citations closer to whatever is already ranking.

Google AI Overviews sit at the opposite end. Since AI Overviews run on Google’s own index and ranking systems, their overlap with Google’s own top 10 runs far higher than either ChatGPT’s or Perplexity’s does. That isn’t a GEO tactic working. It’s Google citing Google.

Gemini and Microsoft Copilot fall somewhere in between, each drawing on its own mix of proprietary retrieval and licensed search data rather than one clean feed. The takeaway stays the same no matter which engine you check: measure the overlap yourself. Don’t assume ChatGPT’s 6.82% applies to Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, or AI Overviews.
